Nitin Nabin Elected BJP National President Unopposed, Marks Generational Shift At 45
Bihar MLA Nitin Nabin (also known as Nitin Naveen) has been elected unopposed as the new national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, after the nomination window closed with no challenger, making the 45‑year‑old leader the youngest person to head the party in its history.
How The Election Was Decided
The organisational election was conducted at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi on 19 January, where returning officer K. Laxman scrutinised all nomination papers filed for the top post.
A total of 37 sets of nomination papers were submitted proposing Nabin’s name, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing president J. P. Nadda, and senior union ministers among the proposers, and no other candidate entered the fray.
After the scrutiny and withdrawal deadline ended, Laxman announced that only one valid nomination remained, formally declaring Nitin Nabin elected unopposed as the BJP’s national president as per party rules.
Formal Announcement And Oath Ceremony
The formal announcement and felicitation are scheduled at the BJP headquarters in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top party leaders, with Nabin expected to address party workers and outline his priorities.
Party sources indicate that the national council will meet soon after to ratify his election and pass key political and organisational resolutions ahead of crucial Assembly and Lok Sabha battles.
Nabin, who has been serving as the party’s national working president since December 2025, effectively steps into the role as the 12th BJP national president, succeeding J. P. Nadda at the end of his extended tenure.
Who Is Nitin Nabin?
A five‑time MLA from the Bankipur (formerly Patna West) seat in Bihar, Nabin is the son of late BJP leader Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha and is known within the party for his organisational work and low‑profile style.
He first entered the Assembly in 2006 following his father’s demise and has since won consecutive elections, including the most recent Bihar polls, often with comfortable margins that strengthened his standing in the party.
Nabin has previously served as Bihar’s Minister for Road Construction and later as Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Law & Justice, giving him administrative experience in infrastructure and governance.
Backed By Top BJP Leadership
- Nabin’s candidature received formal backing from senior leaders including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman and Bhupender Yadav, who either proposed or seconded his nomination.
- Chief Ministers such as Yogi Adityanath (UP), Mohan Charan Majhi (Odisha), Bhajan Lal (Rajasthan), Vishnu Deo Sai (Chhattisgarh) and others also sent letters of support, signalling broad consensus across states.
- Party insiders see his elevation as a carefully calibrated generational shift, pairing a younger president with the existing central leadership around Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah.
Challenges Ahead For The New BJP Chief
Nabin takes charge at a time when the BJP is gearing up for key Assembly elections in states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam, besides preparing its roadmap for the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.
He has repeatedly stressed that the party must strengthen its presence “from panchayat to Parliament”, focus on grassroots outreach and align organisational work with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat”.
