BJP-Led Mahayuti Races Past 200 Local Bodies In Maharashtra, Tightens Grip At Grassroots

By State Correspondents News Desk | Updated: 21 December 2025 | Maharashtra Local Body Polls Mahayuti vs MVA
Officials and party agents inside a counting centre during Maharashtra civic body elections

Counting of votes for **246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats** across Maharashtra has given a clear edge to the ruling **Mahayuti** alliance, with trends and early results showing it ahead in more than **200 local bodies** and the BJP alone topping the charts in over 120. The opposition **Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)** – comprising the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar‑led NCP (SP) – is leading or winning in fewer than 60 councils, underlining the alliance’s struggle to match the ruling combine at the grassroots level.

Seat Tally: BJP Single Largest, Allies Add Muscle

According to state election figures and media tallies, the **BJP** has so far won or led in around **125–130 municipal councils and nagar panchayats**, making it the **single largest party** in these civic polls. Allies **Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction)** and **NCP (Ajit Pawar faction)** are ahead in roughly **50–60** more councils combined, pushing the Mahayuti’s overall tally beyond the **200‑body** mark.

On the other side, the **Congress** is leading in about **25–36** councils, Shiv Sena (UBT) in **8–10**, and NCP (SP) in **8–11**, leaving the MVA’s cumulative tally at just over **50** local bodies, with independents and smaller parties performing strongly in several pockets.

Key Districts: Shinde Sena Shines In Nashik, Palghar

In **Nashik district**, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has emerged as the biggest gainer, winning **five of the 11** municipal council president posts, while the BJP and other parties shared the remaining slots. The Shinde faction has also swept the **Bhadgaon Nagar Panchayat** in Jalgaon, bagging **19 of 24 seats**, with the BJP taking four of the rest.

In **Palghar** district, Shinde Sena candidates won in Dahanu and Palghar councils, while BJP nominees took Jawhar and Wada, further boosting the ruling alliance’s presence in the tribal‑dominated belt along the Gujarat border. Symbolically important **Baramati** remained with the NCP city unit led by Jai Patil, who secured a fourth consecutive term by a narrow margin of about **200 votes**, offering the Sharad Pawar camp a morale boost amid wider losses.

Violence, Family Influence And BMC Shadow

Polling and counting were largely peaceful, though **Ambernath** saw police resort to lathi‑charge after clashes between rival workers, and **Nanded** recorded FIRs over alleged cash distribution to voters. Opposition leaders have accused the ruling bloc of misusing state machinery and money power, allegations the BJP and its partners have rejected as “excuses” after a poor performance.

Several contests highlighted the growing influence of **political families** within the Mahayuti, with relatives of BJP and NCP ministers winning or leading in councils like Akkalkot, Dhamangaon, Murtizapur, Shirpur and Pusad, prompting criticism from rivals about dynastic trends extending into local bodies.

What The Results Mean Politically

Deputy Chief Minister **Eknath Shinde** and BJP leaders have dubbed the outcome a “**trailer**” for the upcoming **Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)** elections and 28 other municipal corporation polls due next month, arguing that the civic results confirm voter support for the Mahayuti government’s development agenda. BJP strategist Chandrashekhar Bawankule claimed the alliance would ultimately win nearly **two‑thirds** of all local bodies once final results are in.

For the MVA, the setback has triggered fresh questions over coordination, candidate selection and grassroots organisation, even as its leaders insist that larger urban corporations like Mumbai, Pune and Thane will offer a “different verdict” when those high‑stakes contests are held in January.
