Sri Vijaya Puram (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) – Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Friday for a multi‑day tour that will see him chair a key meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), review internal security and development initiatives, and attend programmes linked to India’s new criminal laws.

Focus on Parliamentary Consultative Committee Meeting

According to official briefings, Shah will preside over a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the MHA in Wandoor, near Sri Vijaya Puram, where Members of Parliament from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will deliberate on crucial national and internal security issues under the ministry’s domain.

The high‑level interaction is scheduled to take place at a designated venue in Wandoor on Saturday morning, with Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai and several committee MPs expected to participate in the closed‑door deliberations.

Arrival and Security Arrangements

Shah is reaching the archipelago as part of a three‑day programme, and was received at the airport by Andaman & Nicobar Lieutenant Governor Admiral (Retd) D. K. Joshi along with senior civil and police officials.

In view of the Home Minister’s visit and the parallel tour of Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, the local administration and security agencies have heightened security across key points in South Andaman district, including the airport, Wandoor area and important government installations.

Events on Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Development Projects

After the parliamentary committee meeting, the Home Minister is slated to inaugurate an exhibition and outreach programme on the newly‑implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and related criminal law reforms at the ITF Ground and at the Dr B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology auditorium in Dollygunj.

He will also inaugurate and lay foundation stones for a series of development projects of the Andaman & Nicobar administration at a public function in Sri Vijaya Puram, continuing the Centre’s focus on infrastructure, connectivity and tourism in the strategically important island territory.

Strategic and Historical Significance

Government sources highlight that the visit underlines the strategic importance of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for maritime security in the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indo‑Pacific, especially with the tri‑services Andaman and Nicobar Command based here.

Shah had earlier visited the islands to inaugurate development projects, pay tribute at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island and emphasise the archipelago’s role in India’s freedom struggle and national security architecture.
