Trump Vows “Very Serious Retaliation” After 2 US Soldiers, 1 Civilian Killed In Syria ISIS Ambush
The White House has confirmed that two U.S. Army soldiers and a U.S. civilian interpreter were killed when a suspected Islamic State gunman opened fire near a U.S. military position close to Palmyra in central Syria. U.S. Central Command said three other service members were wounded in the ambush, which is the first fatal attack on American forces in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime last year.
How The Attack Happened
According to CENTCOM, the attack took place on Saturday when a lone gunman believed to be linked to the Islamic State opened fire at the entrance of a U.S. outpost during what officials described as a “key leader meeting” with local partner forces near Palmyra. Initial reports say the assailant managed to get close to the gate before being shot dead by U.S. and allied troops, but not before inflicting heavy casualties.
The Pentagon said the three injured soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to a coalition medical facility and are reported to be in stable condition. Names and units of the dead are being withheld until next‑of‑kin notifications are completed in line with U.S. military protocol.
