Telangana Issues Cold Wave Warning for 5–12 Jan 2026
Telangana has issued a cold wave warning for the period 5–12 January 2026, as a fresh spell of intense winter grips the state. Authorities have advised citizens, especially the elderly, children, and those with health issues, to take all necessary precautions against the cold and foggy conditions.
Cold Wave Expected Across Telangana
Weather officials have warned that another peak cold wave spell is set to grip Telangana, including Hyderabad, over the next week. The state is likely to experience mainly clear skies, but with a sharp drop in night temperatures, especially in northern and rural districts.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), several districts have already recorded single-digit minimum temperatures. Sangareddy emerged as one of the coldest districts, while areas like Rangareddy, Vikarabad, Adilabad, and Siddipet reported lows between 8°C and 10°C. In Hyderabad, peripheral and western parts like Serilingampally, Rajendranagar, and Malkajgiri saw minimums around 9–11°C, while core city areas remained slightly warmer.
Expected Temperature Range (5–12 Jan 2026)
- Northern & Rural Districts (Adilabad, Khammam, Nirmal, Sangareddy, Medak, etc.): 7–10°C at night, 25–28°C by day.
- Hyderabad & Surrounding Areas (Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad): 10–13°C at night, 26–29°C by day.
- Warmer Southern Districts (Mahabubnagar, Jogulamba Gadwal, parts of Nalgonda): 12–15°C at night, 28–31°C by day.
Fog & Hazy Conditions Likely
Alongside the cold wave, residents can expect dense fog and hazy conditions, especially during early mornings and late nights. These conditions are likely to reduce visibility on roads and highways, increasing the risk of accidents.
Drivers are advised to use fog lights, reduce speed, maintain safe distance, and avoid late-night or early-morning travel unless absolutely necessary. Authorities have also asked transport operators to ensure vehicles are in good condition and drivers are well-rested.
Government & Health Advisory
The Telangana government and health department have issued a special advisory urging people to take precautions during this cold spell:
Key Precautions Advised
- Wear warm clothes, especially during early mornings and late nights; use caps, mufflers, and gloves for children and elderly.
- Keep homes warm and well-insulated; avoid prolonged exposure to cold winds.
- Drink warm fluids and eat nutritious food to boost immunity.
- Take special care of infants, senior citizens, and those with respiratory or heart conditions.
- Use heaters and room warmers safely; avoid using kerosene stoves or open flames in closed rooms.
- Stay indoors as much as possible during peak cold hours (5–9 AM and 7–10 PM).
- Be cautious while commuting; follow traffic rules and use headlights/fog lights in foggy conditions.
Health officials have warned of a possible spike in respiratory illnesses like cold, cough, fever, and asthma during this period. They advise people to consult a doctor at the first sign of severe symptoms and avoid self-medication.
What Lies Ahead
Meteorologists indicate that this phase is likely to mark the peak of winter in Telangana for the 2025–26 season. The cold wave is expected to gradually ease from around 13 January, with temperatures slowly rising towards normal levels.
Authorities will continue to monitor weather conditions and issue timely updates. The state government has also directed district administrations to remain alert and provide necessary support to vulnerable sections, including the homeless and daily wage workers.
