PM Modi Inaugurates Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension; India Crosses 1,000 km Metro Milestone
About The New Extension
The newly inaugurated Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension is a 2.8 km underground stretch on the Magenta Line, built at an estimated cost of around ₹1,200 crore and designed as the first commissioned corridor of Delhi Metro Phase IV.
This section adds a single new station, Krishna Park Extension, and extends the already operational Botanical Garden–Janakpuri West route, taking the Magenta Line’s overall length to roughly 40 km and improving connectivity across West Delhi neighbourhoods like Vikaspuri and Janakpuri.
Impact On Delhi Metro Network
With the opening of this link, the Delhi Metro network has expanded to nearly 394–395 km across 289 stations, reinforcing its position as India’s largest rapid transit system and a backbone of daily commuting in the National Capital Region.
Passenger services between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension on the Magenta Line commenced from 3 pm on the inauguration day, initially operating at a frequency of about 16 minutes to allow gradual ramp‑up of ridership and operations.
India Becomes 3rd-Largest Metro Network
Including Delhi, metro services now span more than 1,000 km across 11 states and 23 cities, making India the country with the world’s third‑largest operational metro rail network, behind only China and the US.
Urban development officials say the milestone reflects an aggressive push for mass rapid transit, with hundreds of kilometers of additional corridors currently under construction or approved, aimed at reducing congestion and emissions in major Indian cities.
Prime Minister’s Remarks And Future Corridors
During the event, PM Modi highlighted metro expansion as a key driver of “ease of living” for urban residents, and also laid the foundation stone for the 26.5 km Rithala–Narela–Kundli corridor, which will connect North‑West Delhi with fast‑growing zones in Haryana.
The Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension forms part of the longer Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg Phase IV corridor of about 28.9 km with 22 stations, which is targeted for completion in stages by 2026 to strengthen east–west links across the capital.
Benefits For West Delhi Commuters
Residents of dense West Delhi pockets such as Krishna Park, parts of Vikaspuri and Janakpuri are expected to gain shorter travel times to hubs in South, Central and Noida regions as more passengers are diverted from congested roads to the Magenta Line.
The extension is also expected to support commercial and residential growth around the new station by improving last‑mile connectivity and offering smoother interchanges as Phase IV lines progress.
