Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two‑day bilateral visit to Jordan from December 15 to 16, 2025, at the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has described the trip as Modi’s first full‑fledged bilateral engagement with Jordan and the first such prime ministerial visit to the country in this millennium.

Key focus: The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan and will allow leaders to review the “entire gamut” of ties, from political and security cooperation to trade, energy and people‑to‑people links.

Schedule And High-Level Meetings

According to the MEA, Modi will arrive in Amman on December 15, where he will receive a ceremonial welcome before holding delegation‑level talks with King Abdullah II at the royal palace. The two sides are expected to exchange views on regional developments in West Asia, counterterrorism cooperation and global issues of common concern, as well as review progress made since their previous interactions.

The programme includes meetings with Jordan’s senior leadership, business community and members of the Indian diaspora, who play a key role in sectors such as construction, healthcare and services. Officials indicated that Modi’s tour of the ancient city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on December 16 will highlight cultural connections and tourism cooperation between the two countries.

Why The Visit Matters

The visit is being seen as a strategic outreach at a time when West Asia is undergoing shifts in alliances and security dynamics, with Jordan viewed as a moderate, stabilising Arab partner in a volatile neighbourhood. New Delhi and Amman already cooperate on counter‑radicalisation, defence training and information‑sharing, and the leadership talks are expected to further consolidate this security partnership.

Economically, Jordan serves as a gateway for Indian businesses to markets in the Levant and North Africa, with existing collaborations in phosphates, fertilisers, textiles and IT services. Both sides are likely to explore ways to expand trade, diversify investments and deepen cooperation in areas like renewable energy, food security, pharmaceuticals and skill development.

75 Years Of India–Jordan Relations

India and Jordan established diplomatic relations in 1950, and 2025 marks 75 years of this partnership, which has steadily broadened from political goodwill to multi‑sectoral cooperation. The MEA noted that sustained high‑level exchanges in recent years, including King Abdullah II’s earlier state visit to India and Modi’s 2018 transit stop in Amman, have laid the groundwork for the current full‑scale bilateral engagement.

A series of agreements and memorandums of understanding are expected to be concluded or advanced during the visit, covering sectors such as defence, trade facilitation, culture and education. Diplomats on both sides say the anniversary year provides an opportunity to refresh the partnership narrative and set new long‑term targets for cooperation.

Part Of A Larger Three-Nation Tour

Modi’s stop in Jordan will be the first leg of a broader three‑nation tour that also includes Ethiopia and Oman from December 15 to 18, aimed at consolidating India’s outreach across West Asia and Africa. MEA officials have said that the sequence of visits underlines India’s intent to engage closely with key partners spanning the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region on connectivity, maritime security and economic resilience.

Briefings suggest that outcomes from the Jordan leg will feed into wider regional conversations on peace, stability and post‑conflict reconstruction, areas where Amman plays an important diplomatic role. The trip is being closely watched by strategic observers who see it as part of India’s effort to balance energy interests, diaspora welfare and security partnerships amid evolving West Asian geopolitics.
