Israel Launches Ground Invasion of Gaza City Amid UN Genocide Allegations

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched a significant ground offensive in Gaza City on September 16, 2025, marking a substantial escalation in the nearly two-year-old conflict with Hamas. This operation involved two IDF divisions moving into the city with the objective of rooting out and disabling Hamas militants, who are estimated to number around 3,000 within Gaza City. The ground invasion followed extensive aerial and naval strikes that preceded it, intended to weaken Hamas infrastructure and command centers before the infantry advance.

Defense Minister Israel Katz described the situation with the stark declaration, “Gaza is burning,” highlighting the intensity of the bombardment and the severity of the military campaign. The IDF’s aim in this operation is to create conditions for the release of hostages held by Hamas and to dismantle what Israel terms as terrorist infrastructure embedded within densely populated urban zones.

As the offensive unfolded, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian residents fled Gaza City, many trying to escape southwards amid warnings to evacuate. However, humanitarian groups report that significant numbers remain trapped due to lack of safe refuges and resources. The ground invasion has caused widespread devastation, including the destruction of residential buildings, schools, mosques, and key infrastructure.

This military action coincided with a controversial United Nations investigation that found credible evidence accusing Israel of committing acts amounting to genocide in Gaza. The U.N. commission concluded that statements and conduct by Israeli forces indicated genocidal intent against the Palestinian population inside Gaza. Israel vehemently rejected these allegations, calling them politically motivated falsehoods and distortions, maintaining that its actions are legitimate responses to terrorism.

The offensive has drawn mixed international reactions, with some nations expressing concern over humanitarian impacts and others backing Israel’s right to self-defense, stressing the complexity of ending the conflict amid hostage crises and ongoing violence. The situation remains highly volatile as IDF forces continue to push further into the urban landscape of Gaza City, which poses significant humanitarian and military challenges.

In summary, the IDF ground offensive initiated on September 16 seeks to decisively weaken Hamas’s hold on Gaza City through a combination of military force and territorial occupation, while the conflict is sharply underscored by serious allegations of war crimes and genocide by international observers, deepening the crisis in the region.

The report, released by an independent UN inquiry, claims grave human rights violations and war crimes in the conflict with Hamas. Meanwhile, the ground operation has led to a mass exodus of civilians toward designated “humanitarian” zones amid intense fighting.

International reactions have varied, with heightened calls for ceasefire negotiations and humanitarian access. The evolving conflict remains central to global diplomatic and security discussions.
