On September 11, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India issued a strong advisory urging all Indian citizens to postpone all non-essential travel to Nepal. This advisory was prompted by escalating political turmoil in Nepal, where widespread protests and civil unrest led to the resignation of Nepal’s Prime Minister, K P Sharma Oli. The unrest has generated a volatile environment that is unsafe for travelers and residents alike. The MEA highlighted that Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport has been shut down indefinitely due to protests and security concerns. This shutdown has severely disrupted air travel and caused many flights to be diverted to nearby Indian airports such as Lucknow and Delhi. Indian airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, have suspended or limited their Kathmandu operations temporarily, while offering rescheduling options and refunds for affected passengers. Heightened security measures have been implemented along the India-Nepal border, especially in the neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, to control illegal crossings and maintain law and order. The advisory also instructs Indian nationals already present in Nepal to shelter safely at their current residences, avoid venturing out onto the streets, and strictly follow safety directions issued by Nepali authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. They are advised to keep all identification and travel documents ready and maintain regular communication with the embassy. To assist Indian citizens in distress, the embassy has established emergency helplines equipped with WhatsApp functionality for easier communication. The Indian government continues to closely monitor the evolving situation and assures that it will take all necessary measures to protect the welfare of Indian citizens in Nepal. In summary, the MEA’s travel advisory represents a precautionary step reflecting India’s concern for its citizens’ safety amid Nepal’s ongoing political instability, calling for vigilance, restraint, and adherence to official guidance until the situation stabilizes.
