Usman Khawaja Announces Retirement from International Cricket After Sydney Ashes Test
Sydney, Australia – In an emotional press conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Australian veteran Usman Khawaja has announced that he will retire from all international cricket after the fifth and final Ashes Test against England, bringing down the curtain on a glittering 15‑year international career.
“Final Test at SCG Will Be My Last”
Standing with his family by his side, the 39‑year‑old left‑handed batter confirmed that the upcoming Ashes Test at the SCG will be his final appearance in international cricket.
“I’m here to announce today that I’ll be retiring from all international cricket after the SCG Test match,” Khawaja said. “The number one emotion is contentment. I’m very lucky to have played so many games for Australia the way I have.”
Full Circle at the SCG
Khawaja’s international journey began at the SCG in 2011, when he made his Test debut against England in the final Ashes Test of that series. Now, he will bid farewell at the same iconic ground, completing a full circle in his career.
“It’s fitting that my last Test will be here, at the SCG, against England,” he added. “This ground has given me so many memories, and I hope I can finish on a high note.”
Career Highlights
Over his 15‑year international career, Khawaja has represented Australia in:
- 87 Tests: 6,206 runs at an average of 43.39, with 16 centuries and 28 half‑centuries.
- 106 ODIs: Over 3,500 runs and 10 centuries.
- 45 T20Is: A reliable middle‑order batter in the shortest format.
He is also remembered for his stylish strokeplay, resilience under pressure, and crucial knocks in big series, including Ashes, World Test Championship, and tours of India and Pakistan.
A Message Against Stereotyping
In a powerful moment, Khawaja opened up about the racial stereotyping he faced during his career, especially after a back injury in the first Ashes Test.
“I’m a proud Muslim, coloured boy from Pakistan who was told I’d never play for Australia,” he said. “Look at me now, and you can do the same. Cricket has given me far more than I ever imagined.”
What’s Next for Khawaja?
Khawaja clarified that he will continue playing domestic cricket in Australia, including the Sheffield Shield and Big Bash League, but will no longer represent Australia in any format.
“I’ll still be around the game, playing for New South Wales and in the BBL, but my international journey ends at the SCG,” he said.
Reactions from Cricket World
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg praised Khawaja’s contribution:
“On behalf of Australian cricket, I’d like to thank and congratulate Usman for all he has achieved. He’s been one of our most stylish and resilient batsmen, and an inspiration off the field too.”
Former captains, teammates, and fans from around the world have flooded social media with tributes, calling him a “class act” and a “true fighter.”
A Fitting Farewell in Sydney
With Australia already retaining the Ashes, the SCG Test will now also serve as a grand farewell for Khawaja. Fans are expected to give him a standing ovation as he walks out for the last time in the Baggy Green.
“I hope I’ve inspired many children, especially those from minority backgrounds, to believe they can represent their country,” Khawaja said. “Thank you for letting me live my dream, and for sharing it with me.”
