Russia and Belarus Hold Major War Games

Russian and Belarusian Forces Conduct Major War Games Amid NATO Tensions

September 17, 2025

Russia and Belarus have launched large-scale military exercises called “Zapad 2025,” designed to simulate defense operations against a hypothetical Western attack. Held from September 12 to 16, 2025, these joint war games took place at multiple training grounds across Belarus and Russia, including strategic regions near Belarus’s Barysaw and the Kaliningrad oblast, as well as the Baltic and Barents Sea areas. Approximately 13,000 troops officially participated, a reduction from the roughly 200,000 claimed in previous Zapad exercises, but analysts believe activity was spread over various sites with parallel operations. The exercises involved a vast array of military hardware including infantry units, heavy artillery, advanced missile systems, strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons, and cruise missile launches over neutral waters such as the Barents Sea. Russian and Belarusian forces practiced using both conventional arms and tactical nuclear weapons, including the deployment and operational readiness of Russia’s Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile system recently positioned in Belarus. The war games included drone-supported infantry advances on motorcycles and quad bikes, aerial combat training, and simulated long-range missile strikes, showcasing a high level of firepower and coordination. The drills represent a clear demonstration of combat readiness amid heightened tensions with NATO, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and multiple Russian drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace, which are NATO member states. NATO countries and the US closely monitored the exercises, with military observers from the US, Turkey, Hungary, and other NATO members invited to observe under the banner of transparency. While Russia and Belarus assert that Zapad 2025 aims to bolster the Union State’s defensive capabilities and readiness for any aggressor, critics and NATO members see it as a provocative display of power and a rehearsal for potential large-scale conflict in Eastern Europe. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko claimed the drills covered everything from small arms to nuclear warheads. Meanwhile, the Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the strategic importance of the exercises and their role in preparing coalition forces from Russia’s allies, including India, Iran, Bangladesh, and several African nations. The geopolitical context of Zapad 2025 is intensified by Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and fears of escalation involving NATO countries. The presence of nuclear-capable weapons in the drills has added to international concern. The exercises serve as both a warning and a demonstration of military strength meant to deter Western intervention and reaffirm Moscow and Minsk’s alliance amid a rapidly shifting security landscape in Europe and beyond. Thus, Zapad 2025 stands as a highly significant event, underscoring Russia and Belarus’s strategic priorities and willingness to prepare for potential large-scale warfare scenarios against Western forces, while simultaneously projecting power to global and regional

Russia and Belarus have launched large-scale military exercises named “Zapad 2025” simulating large-scale defense operations against a hypothetical Western attack. These war games, involving thousands of troops and advanced weaponry, come amid escalating tensions with NATO forces and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The drills underscore Moscow’s commitment to showcase military readiness and power projection in Eastern Europe, intensifying geopolitical concerns. NATO has condemned these maneuvers as provocative and destabilizing for the region’s fragile security environment.

International observers watch closely as the war games unfold, highlighting the broader strategic competition on the continent.
