Kathmandu/New Delhi, Aug 26: At least 105 Indian nationals and 37 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are among nearly 400 individuals reported missing following catastrophic flash floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border on Wednesday.
The calamity was triggered around 9:00 AM local time when a massive torrent surged down the Bhote Koshi River from the Tibetan side. The deluge swept through riverside settlements, left at least four people dead, and severely damaged over a dozen hydropower installations across the border districts of Rasuwa, Dhading, and Nuwakot.
Large Pilgrim Contingent Affected According to the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), 384 travelers—comprising 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalese citizens—remain unaccounted for. A substantial number of the missing Indian nationals were en route to the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in Tibet, with tour operator Samrat Tours confirming at least 59 pilgrims in the affected zone. The missing foreigners also include tourists from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, and the Netherlands.
New Delhi Extends Immediate Assistance Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with his Nepalese counterpart, conveying deep condolences over the loss of lives and pledging comprehensive humanitarian aid.
Taking to X, PM Modi stated: “Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time.” He added that Indian teams are closely coordinating with Nepalese authorities on rescue and relief operations.
