SRINAGAR: High-voltage political turbulence gripped the summer capital on Wednesday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mobilized thousands of workers and top leaders in a thunderous march toward the Civil Secretariat. The agitation was aimed directly at the National Conference-led dispensation, taking it to task over acute unemployment, spiraling power tariffs, erratic drinking water supplies, fractured road networks, and an alleged paralysis across vital public infrastructure projects.
The massive rally began at the historic Clock Tower in Lal Chowk. Brandishing anti-establishment placards, chanting fiery slogans, and demanding institutional accountability, the sea of protesters attempted to breach the administrative corridor before their march was abruptly halted by an elaborate security cordon near Hari Singh High Street (HSHS).
High Security Net Intercepts Secretariat March
Anticipating heavy mobilization, authorities threw a dense security ring around central Srinagar. Heavily armed units of Jammu & Kashmir Police and paramilitary personnel set up reinforced barricades, wire networks, and multi-tier checkpoints along all arterial roads leading from Lal Chowk to the Civil Secretariat.
Vehicular traffic around the Clock Tower square was diverted through alternate routes, while movement toward the Secretariat remained strictly regulated to avert law-and-order breaches. As the procession reached the edge of Hari Singh High Street, senior police officers intervened, physically preventing the marching demonstrators from advancing further into the high-security administrative zone.

Addressing the packed assembly of demonstrators, BJP J&K Unit President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma launched a blistering assault on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s governance model. Sharma asserted that the public’s patience had run out following years of administrative stagnation.
“What can citizens genuinely expect from a Chief Minister under whose stewardship critical development has screeched to a complete halt? The electorate will not tolerate these calculated attempts to deflect attention from governance failures. Our message is plain: either deliver substantial results during your remaining three years, or step down immediately.”
Drawing attention to the venue, Sharma underlined the symbolic shift at the heart of Srinagar, claiming that over 10,000 workers and local citizens gathered peacefully without fear. “This is the same historic Lal Chowk where unfurling the National Tricolour was once prevented. Today, thousands stand here united and peaceful, resolved that this government must either govern effectively or forfeit power,” he noted.
Sharma also hit out at the ruling party’s rhetoric regarding cross-border tensions, declaring that the BJP would never tolerate political forces that grant an indirect clean chit to Pakistan whenever security incidents occur in the region while deflecting blame toward the Central Government.
LoP Sunil Sharma Challenges Omar to Resign Ganderbal Seat
Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly Sunil Sharma amplified the attack, characterizing the protest as an inevitable eruption of popular fury over bread-and-butter grievances. He accused the administration of running an patronage system where official recruitment bodies like the PSC and SSRB have been sidelined in favor of ruling-party middlemen and partisan contractors.
Taking direct aim at the Chief Minister’s electoral rhetoric, LoP Sharma dared Omar Abdullah to put his political capital on the line rather than leaning on unexecutable promises:
“Omar Abdullah misled the public by promising the restoration of Article 370, 200 free units of electricity, and 100,000 public jobs. If he possesses an ounce of moral conviction, let him resign from his Ganderbal Assembly seat today and seek a direct mandate from the people solely on the plank of statehood. If the electorate endorses him, we will bow to his mandate; otherwise, he must concede his administrative failure.”
The demonstration concluded after senior leaders addressed the barricaded crowd, reaffirming that the BJP will intensify its state-wide campaign, taking the agitation from city squares to peripheral villages until accountability is restored in the Civil Secretariat.
