Dr. Manmohan Singh Receives P V Narasimha Rao Award
On September 11, 2025, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was posthumously honored with the prestigious P V Narasimha Rao Memorial Award for Economics, recognizing his visionary leadership and pivotal role in transforming India’s economic landscape. This distinguished award was presented at a solemn ceremony held in New Delhi, attended by prominent economists, policymakers, and dignitaries. The honor was accepted by Dr. Singh’s widow, Gursharan Kaur, who expressed gratitude on behalf of the late leader. The event featured the presence of Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former deputy chairman of the erstwhile Planning Commission and a distinguished fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress, who conferred the award. Alongside him were K Ramchandra Murthy, president of the PV Narasimha Rao Memorial Foundation (PVNMF), and General Secretary Madhamchetty Anil Kumar. Dr. Singh is celebrated as the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms, a period when the country faced a severe balance-of-payments crisis. His strategic policies helped open India’s economy to the global market, attract foreign investments, and revitalize growth, laying the foundation of modern India’s economic framework. Serving as India’s Finance Minister during this critical time and later as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, he championed reforms marked by prudence, transparency, and commitment to public welfare. The award highlights Dr. Singh’s lifelong dedication to public service, economic development, ethical governance, and nation-building—qualities that continue to inspire policymakers and scholars alike.
