NEW DELHI: In a decisive drive toward consumer protection and preventative healthcare, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is accelerating regulatory frameworks to mandate prominent Front-of-Pack Nutritional Labelling (FOPNL) for pre-packaged foods that contain high thresholds of sugar, saturated fat, and sodium (HFSS).

The move is aimed at empowering consumers with instant, unambiguous nutritional data at the point of purchase, steering public dietary habits away from ultra-processed formulations that have been closely linked to the escalating incidence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular ailments across the nation.

Key Regulatory Pillars Under FSSAI’s New Directive
  • Front-of-Pack Warning Badges: Direct visual indicators on package faces highlighting excessive levels of sugar, saturated fat, and salt.
  • Stricter Thresholds: Clear per-serving nutritional caps aligned with World Health Organization (WHO) dietary recommendations.
  • Intensified Regional Audits: Deployment of multi-district inspection squads to conduct surprise sampling across industrial processing plants and retail chains.
  • Misleading Claims Penalty: Tightened surveillance against ambiguous “healthy” or “natural” brand claims lacking empirical backing.
  • Upgraded Testing Infrastructure: Expansion of accredited state food laboratories to ensure rapid turnaround times for chemical and microbiological assessments.

“Clear, visible front-of-pack warnings take nutritional transparency out of fine print and place informed choice directly in the hands of consumers. Strict compliance across manufacturing and regional distribution lines will be enforced without exception.”

Targeting Hidden Sugars and Excessive Sodium

Current regulatory analysis underscores that complex back-of-pack ingredient listings often obscure significant concentrations of added sugars, refined sodium, and trans fats. Under the proposed front-of-pack norms, packaged beverages, snacks, breakfast cereals, and processed ready-to-eat products crossing designated nutritional thresholds will be required to display easily decipherable warning badges.

The initiative seeks to motivate food business operators (FBOs) to proactively reformulate existing product portfolios by reducing sodium and sugar additives in favour of healthier, nutrient-dense alternatives.

Aggressive Regional Inspections and Laboratory Scrutiny

Complementing the labelling framework, FSSAI has issued fresh directives to State Food Safety Commissioners to intensify surveillance and surprise inspections across production hubs, cold-storage warehouses, and distribution centers.

Special inspection squads have been tasked with sampling dairy derivatives, edible oils, confectioneries, spices, and packaged snacks. Authorities highlighted that stringent legal penalties—including product recalls, cancellation of manufacturing licenses, and prosecution under the Food Safety and Standards Act—will be initiated against violators engaging in adulteration or deceptive marketing.
