Noida Techie Death: CM Yogi Orders SIT Probe, Noida Authority CEO Removed After Sector 150 Horror
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a three‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of 27‑year‑old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, whose car plunged into a water‑filled construction pit in Greater Noida’s Sector 150, even as the Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M has been removed from his post and placed on a “waitlist” amid nationwide outrage.
How The Incident Happened
The incident occurred late on the foggy night between January 16 and 17 when Mehta, who worked with a Gurugram‑based IT firm, was driving back home towards Tata Eureka Park when his car broke through the edge of a drain and toppled into a deep, water‑logged pit near a construction site at the Sector 150 crossing.
Eyewitnesses and residents allege that the pit, reportedly over 20 feet deep and dug for a basement, had inadequate barricading, poor lighting and no proper reflectors, turning the stretch into a death trap on a night with near‑zero visibility.
A delivery agent who was present at the spot has claimed that Mehta kept crying out for help and struggled for nearly two hours while bystanders watched, and that timely deployment of divers and equipment could have saved his life.
Family’s Allegations and Post‑Mortem Findings
Mehta’s father, Raj Kumar Mehta, has accused local authorities of serious negligence, alleging that the response was slow, uncoordinated and lacking basic rescue gear, even as his son was trapped inside the submerged vehicle.
The post‑mortem report has indicated that Mehta died due to drowning‑related asphyxia and cardiac arrest, with officials pointing out that prolonged exposure to icy‑cold water in peak winter may have triggered heart failure along with suffocation.
Residents of nearby societies staged protests at the site, blaming poor safety oversight by the builder and civic agencies and insisting that the tragedy was the outcome of avoidable administrative lapses rather than a simple accident.
CM Yogi’s Action: SIT Formed, CEO Removed
Taking cognisance of the incident, CM Yogi Adityanath ordered the formation of a special three‑member SIT headed by the Additional Director General (ADG), Meerut Zone, with the Divisional Commissioner, Meerut, and the Chief Engineer, PWD, as members.
The SIT has been asked to examine the sequence of events, lapses in safety and rescue, responsibility of the developer and officials, and to submit a detailed report to the Chief Minister within five days.
In a strong administrative step, IAS officer Lokesh M has been removed as CEO of the Noida Authority and placed on a waiting list, signalling that the state government holds top‑level accountability for failing to prevent the fatal mishap.
Other Disciplinary Steps And FIR
- The Noida Authority has terminated a junior engineer with the traffic cell and issued show‑cause notices to several officials tasked with traffic and safety management around Sector 150.
- Authorities have said that safety norms at all construction sites across the area will be re‑inspected, with strict directions that negligence in barricading, lighting or signage will invite action.
- An FIR has been registered against two real estate developers based on the family’s complaint, and police have stated that culpable individuals will be proceeded against as per the SIT’s findings.
- Police maintain that fire services, SDRF, NDRF and local teams were deployed but cite dense fog and visibility issues as major challenges during the rescue operation.
National Debate On Urban Safety
The Sector 150 tragedy has sparked a wider debate on construction‑site safety, accountability of development authorities and the preparedness of emergency response systems in rapidly urbanising regions like Noida and Greater Noida.
With the case now under an SIT and the Noida Authority’s top official removed, opposition parties, residents’ groups and civil society will be watching closely to see whether systemic corrections follow or if the outrage ends with transfers and suspensions.
