J&K On Alert For Fresh Western Disturbance; CM Omar Hopes Snowfall Will Clear Air, Boost Winter Tourism
Jammu & Kashmir administration has activated a winter preparedness plan as an active western disturbance approaches the Union Territory, with the IMD predicting scattered to widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall and the possibility of heavy snowfall with snowstorm conditions over higher reaches in the next 24 hours.
IMD Warns Of Moderate To Heavy Snowfall
In its latest press bulletin, the India Meteorological Department said a western disturbance is impacting the western Himalayan region, with scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall very likely over Jammu–Kashmir–Ladakh during the next three days.
The IMD has specifically warned of heavy snowfall, accompanied by snowstorm-like conditions and gusty winds touching 50–60 kmph and reduced visibility below 400 metres at isolated places over higher reaches of Jammu–Kashmir–Ladakh during the next 24 hours, prompting authorities to issue an alert for mountain passes and upper reaches.
- Light to moderate snowfall likely across many higher reaches, with isolated heavy snowfall over north and central Kashmir ranges.
- Snowstorm conditions, strong winds and sharply reduced visibility possible in some upper reaches, affecting road connectivity.
- Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also possible over parts of Jammu–Kashmir–Ladakh during this spell.
Administration Steps Up Preparedness
Divisional and district administrations have been directed to remain on standby with snow-clearance machinery, power and road-repair teams, and emergency services for snow-bound districts, particularly in Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal and other high-altitude belts.
Transport and road maintenance agencies have been asked to keep key highways and internal routes under close watch, with special focus on mountain passes, border roads and interior routes where heavy accumulation and slippery surfaces could disrupt traffic.
- Residents, tourists and transporters have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to snow-bound areas during peak snowfall and to follow official traffic advisories.
- People in hilly and avalanche-prone areas have been advised to stock essentials, ensure proper heating and stay updated through official weather bulletins.
- Drivers have been asked to use anti-skid chains where required and exercise caution on slippery stretches and hairpin bends.
Omar: Snow Will Clear Air, Help Tourism
Reviewing the preparedness for the incoming snow spell, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the expected snowfall would “purify the air, decrease pollution levels and kick-start our winter tourist season”, noting that prolonged dry weather had led to hazy conditions in parts of the Valley.
He pointed out that a good snowfall in December is crucial for destinations such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and upper reaches of Srinagar, adding that fresh snow cover attracts holidaymakers, improves air quality by washing away suspended pollutants and replenishes water resources for the coming year.
- Tourism officials expect higher footfall for skiing, snowboarding and snow sightseeing once slopes in Gulmarg and other resorts receive adequate snow.
- Stakeholders say early-season snowfall can extend the winter tourism window and support hotels, guides, transporters and local businesses.
- The government has been highlighting responsible and sustainable tourism practices to ensure environmental protection alongside growth.
Western Disturbances: Blessing And Challenge
Weather experts describe western disturbances as a double-edged phenomenon for Jammu & Kashmir, bringing vital snow and rain that recharge glaciers, aquifers and rivers, but also carrying the risk of road blockages, avalanches and landslides when systems turn intense.
Authorities have reiterated that the focus this week will be on keeping essential services running, ensuring quick snow clearance on priority corridors and balancing safety concerns with the economic opportunity that a strong winter season brings for the region.
