A New Era of Secure Travel Begins
India has introduced e-passports nationwide, offering citizens electronic travel documents embedded with secure chips and biometric features. These passports meet global ICAO standards and store encrypted data including fingerprints and facial information, making identity authentication fast and reliable at international airports.
Key Features and Benefits
E-passports utilize advanced Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption, protecting personal details from tampering and fraud. Police verification is now streamlined, reducing waiting time for applicants. Importantly, existing booklet passports remain valid until expiry, and e-passports will be gradually issued to new applicants and those renewing their travel documents.
Global Mobility and Modernization
Joining over 120 nations now using biometric e-passports, India’s upgrade reinforces its commitment to secure, seamless travel and efficient government services. The initiative is part of the wider Passport Seva Programme 2.0, modernizing citizen experiences and improving international mobility.
