C P Radhakrishnan Elected India’s 15th Vice President
On September 11, 2025, senior leader C P Radhakrishnan emerged victorious in the Vice Presidential election of India, winning by a convincing majority margin of 152 votes. Radhakrishnan, the candidate representing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra, secured 452 valid votes out of 767 electors who participated in the election. His main opponent was Justice B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge supported by opposition parties.
In his victory speech, Radhakrishnan emphasized the need for “inclusive and futuristic approach” and reaffirmed his commitment to India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of India’s independence. He described his election as not just a personal win but a triumph of the nationalistic ideology and called upon all Indians to work together for the nation’s progress.
Political leaders from across the spectrum congratulated him, praising his extensive parliamentary experience, administrative acumen, and statesmanlike qualities. Awarded respect for his integrity and unblemished public life, Radhakrishnan’s role as Vice President will also include serving as the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament.
The Vice President’s office had been vacant since July following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health reasons. Radhakrishnan is expected to take oath of office on September 12, 2025, formally commencing his term as the 15th Vice President of India.
