Bihar Govt Announces Residential Schools, Cashless Treatment & ‘Jeevika Didi Ki Rasoi’ For Police Families

In a significant welfare push for the force, the Bihar government has announced that residential schools will be opened in all 40 police lines for the children of police personnel, alongside cashless medical treatment facilities and expansion of “Jeevika didi ki rasoi” community kitchens to every police campus in the state.

Residential Schools In All 40 Police Lines

State Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary said that residential schools will be set up in each of Bihar’s 40 police lines so that the children of jawans and officers can access quality education without having to move away from their parents’ place of posting.

He underlined that long and demanding duty hours often make it difficult for police personnel to closely monitor their children’s studies, and that the government wants to ensure a safe, supportive, campus-based schooling environment tailored to police families’ needs.

Key features of the residential school plan
  • Residential schools to be developed in all 40 police lines of Bihar, in a phased but time-bound manner.
  • Priority admission for children of serving and retired police personnel posted in the respective districts.
  • Focus on quality schooling, hostel facilities and a secure environment within or adjacent to police campuses.

Cashless Medical Treatment For Police Families

Along with education facilities, the state government has announced cashless medical treatment for police personnel and their dependants, aimed at reducing the financial and emotional stress during serious illness or emergencies.

Senior officials highlighted that the police welfare and insurance schemes, being run in partnership with institutions like Bank of Baroda, have already disbursed over ₹43 crore to the families of around 90 personnel, with several more cases in the pipeline for settlement.

Medical and insurance support at a glance
  • Provision for cashless treatment of police personnel and their family members at empanelled hospitals for serious ailments and emergencies.
  • Special insurance scheme under which crores of rupees have already been paid to bereaved families of personnel who lost their lives.
  • Assistance of up to ₹20 lakh even in eligible cases of death by suicide, reflecting a more sensitive approach to mental-health-linked tragedies in the force.

‘Jeevika Didi Ki Rasoi’ In Every Police Line

Taking forward the model introduced at the new Patna Police Line, the government has decided that “Jeevika didi ki rasoi” – community kitchens run by women’s self-help groups under Bihar’s JEEViKA programme – will be started in all remaining 39 police lines by January 30.

These centralized kitchens provide fresh, hygienic and affordable meals to thousands of police personnel on campus, while simultaneously creating stable employment and income opportunities for rural women associated with JEEViKA.

How ‘Jeevika didi ki rasoi’ will help
  • Police personnel will get timely, nutritious food at subsidised rates, reducing daily stress about arranging meals during long duty hours.
  • Each kitchen will be run by trained JEEViKA didis, strengthening women’s economic empowerment and community participation in police welfare.
  • Centralised cooking and dining facilities are expected to save time and improve readiness, allowing personnel to focus more on law-and-order duties.

Government Stresses Respect And Support For Force

Addressing the welfare event, senior leaders said the government recognises that police personnel often work beyond eight-hour shifts, shoulder critical internal security responsibilities and frequently stay away from their families, making it essential to strengthen housing, food, education and health facilities for them.

Officials added that the combined package of residential schools, cashless medical care, insurance support and community kitchens reflects a long-term effort to improve quality of life in police campuses and to send a clear message that the state stands firmly with its force and their families.
