PIB Srinagar Media Delegation Visits DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, Sept 14: A 13-member media delegation from Jammu and Kashmir, organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Srinagar, visited the renowned DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum at Muttukadu on Monday as part of an ongoing week-long national press tour running from September 13 to 19.
During the visit, museum curator Lakuma Chebrolu briefed the delegation on the architectural intricacies of the preserved heritage homes. She outlined the distinctive regional design sensibilities embedded in each structure and detailed the living cultural traditions represented across the sprawling living-history institution.
The open-air museum preserves reconstructed traditional houses representing Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Chebrolu noted that each ancestral home was meticulously dismantled from its original location and faithfully reconstructed on-site by regional artisans and traditional master craftsmen, ensuring native building materials and structural techniques remained intact.
The visiting journalists walked through authentic recreated village streetscapes and historic living environments, gaining direct insight into South India’s historical vernacular architecture and everyday social traditions.
Director of DakshinaChitra, Shri Sharath Nambiar, interacted extensively with the media personnel. He traced the trajectory of the museum’s foundation and acknowledged the continuous institutional backing of the Union Government, particularly the Ministry of Culture, which provided the land and ongoing operational support for the site.
The tour gave the delegation a comprehensive look at modern curation methods for indigenous crafts, folk performing arts, and traditional architecture, illustrating their continued relevance for contemporary public engagement.
Following the heritage tour, the delegation met with Shri Sanjay Ghosh, Deputy Director of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Chennai.
The tour is led by Shri Shahid Mohammad Lone, Field Publicity Officer (FPO), Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), serving as the Conducting Officer, accompanied by Shri Ifham Ul Islam, Information Assistant at PIB Srinagar.
