November 24, 2025: Justice Surya Kant took oath today as the 53rd Chief Justice of India in a solemn ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu, marking the beginning of Justice Kant’s term, which will continue until February 9, 2027.
The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and several senior cabinet ministers and judges.
Justice Surya Kant, hailing from a modest background in Haryana, has served with distinction in the Supreme Court, contributing to landmark constitutional rulings such as the abrogation of Article 370, electoral roll revisions in Bihar, and the Pegasus spyware case. Known for his judicial wisdom and empathy, he has authored over 300 judgments during his tenure in the apex court.
As Chief Justice, Justice Kant has emphasized his commitment to reducing the huge backlog of pending cases in the Supreme Court and clearing Constitution Bench matters efficiently. He also launched initiatives supporting legal assistance to armed forces personnel and their families.
