Google to Invest $15 Billion to Build Largest AI and Data Center Hub in India
Tech giant Google has announced a landmark investment of $15 billion to establish a massive artificial intelligence (AI) and data center hub in India. The project, slated for completion over the next five years, marks Google’s largest-ever financial commitment outside the United States and is aimed at accelerating India’s digital transformation.
The data center and AI hub will be located in Visakhapatnam, a major port city in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. With a planned capacity of one gigawatt to start, the facility is expected to expand in the coming years and become a digital backbone connecting various regions of India. This cutting-edge infrastructure will integrate gigawatt-scale compute capabilities, an international subsea gateway, and robust energy systems.
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai shared that this AI hub will bring the company’s world-leading AI technologies to Indian enterprises and users, fostering innovation and promoting inclusive economic growth. He described the investment as a landmark development aligned with India’s vision for a technologically advanced and digitally empowered future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight at Google’s announcement, calling the multi-faceted investment a powerful force that will democratize technology across India, deliver AI tools to citizens, boost the digital economy, and secure India’s position as a global technology leader.
The project is expected to generate around 180,000 jobs and significantly contribute to the regional economy. It represents a key part of India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision, aiming to establish the country as a global digital and AI hub.
Union Ministers, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, praised the investment, emphasizing its potential to drive innovation, empower startups, and develop AI skills among the youth.
This initiative is in partnership with the Adani Group and highlights a strong collaboration between Google and the Indian government to advance AI infrastructure. The hub will also support AI-driven solutions across diverse sectors like healthcare, education, finance, and manufacturing.
The $15 billion investment symbolizes growing confidence in India’s technology ecosystem and Google’s commitment to the country’s digital future. Construction is set to begin soon, with operations expected to scale up progressively through 2030.
