Severe Cyclone Looms Over Bay of Bengal
Cyclone Montha, currently strengthening in the Bay of Bengal, is forecast to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning, with landfall expected along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada. The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for coastal Andhra and Odisha as emergency preparations ramp up. Wind speeds are predicted to reach 90–100 km/h, causing heavy rainfall and possible storm surges.
Impact on Train Services and Public Safety
In response to the threat, the East Coast Railway has cancelled 43 trains originating from or passing through Visakhapatnam, Kirandul, Kakinada Port, Rajahmundry, and other stations for October 27–29, prioritizing passenger safety. Services affected include the Visakhapatnam–Kirandul Express, Visakhapatnam–Kakinada Port Express, and several other passenger routes critical for daily commuters.
- Visakhapatnam–Kirandul Express (18515/18516), Kakinada Port Express (17268), and Rajahmundry MEMU trains among the cancelled list.
- Authorities have advised fishermen to stay ashore until October 29 and urged residents along the Bay of Bengal to remain vigilant.
- Disaster management teams have been mobilized, and temporary shelters set up for evacuees in high-risk coastal areas.
Regional Response & Safety Measures
Over 50,000 people have been moved to relief camps as heavy rainfall disrupts daily life and road travel. Schools in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, and West Godavari districts are closed, with emergency operations active. Meteorological updates continue to advise against sea travel, and local administrations remain on high alert for further developments as Cyclone Montha nears landfall.
