The Delhi government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at empowering women and transgender commuters by providing free travel on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses. The innovative scheme, named ‘Pink Saheli Smart Card’, was launched today with the goal of promoting safety and convenience for women and transgender individuals using public transport in the city.
Details of the Pink Saheli Smart Card
The Pink Saheli Smart Card is a contactless, recharge-enabled card available exclusively to women and transgender persons. It allows free travel across the entire Delhi public bus network, including both DTC and cluster buses. The card can be easily availed at authorized DTC counters and government offices, and users can top-up it as needed without any additional charges for travel.
This initiative is part of the Delhi government’s broader efforts to ensure safe, affordable, and accessible transportation for marginalized groups while also encouraging more women to use public transit confidently.
Government Officials’ Remarks
The Delhi Transport Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, emphasized the importance of safety and empowerment through such schemes, stating, “The Pink Saheli Smart Card is a step towards making public transport safer and more accessible for women and transgender commuters, fostering a more inclusive environment in Delhi.”
The scheme has received widespread praise from civic groups and women’s rights organizations, who see it as a significant move to promote gender equality in urban mobility systems.
The Pink Saheli Smart Card initiative underscores Delhi’s dedication to creating a safe, inclusive, and empowered environment for women and transgender individuals in the city’s public transportation system.
